This test helps detect Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) by measuring breath gases after drinking a lactulose solution.

The Lactulose Breath Test checks for distal SIBO, bacterial overgrowth in the lower part of the small intestine. Because lactulose isn’t absorbed, it travels further down the gut, so gas levels rise later in the test, indicating overgrowth in the distal small bowel.
